Priyanka Chopra will play the female protagonist in Ram Leela, Sanjay Leela Bhansali's take on Shakespeare's Romeo & Juliet, it has been confirmed by the film's costume designer Anju Modi. The film additionally headlines Ranveer Singh.
Anju has been chosen over Sabyasachi, a Bhansali favorite, who last designed for Devdas and Guzaarish heroines Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit.
"I am designing for Priyanka, Supriya Pathak and to some extent Ranveer Singh. I was supposed to design for Kareena, but now it's Priyanka. Both are divas and I'm equally excited," Anju told HT.
Ram Leela is set in Gujarat and Anju says the reason she got the job was because her work echoes traditions of Rajasthan and Kutch.
"...I was very impressed by their research. Sanjay and I first met in Mumbai and then we went to Ahmedabad to shop for the film. We went to small shops in narrow gullies to source the material," says Anju.
"We shopped for 8-10 hours and I observed that he has grand ideas," she added.
