After Kareena Kapoor, Bhansali was in talks with Priyanka Chopra, but she could not pull off the dates due to prior commitments.
Bhansali also had words with Katrina Kaif as the project needed a light skin heroine, but Katrina is neck deep in YRF projects.
"Bhansali wanted an A-list heroine to play Leela. He approached Katrina but she did not have dates. Deepika was the only one with available dates for the project. Bhansali was only too happy to have her," a source told Mumbai Mirror.
Interestingly Deepika too did not have open dates, but she gave the ones she had allotted for the Ekta Kapoor and Karan Johar's co-production to Bhansali because the other film was taking too long to get off the ground.
"The other project was taking too much time. The script wasn't ready. So Deepika simply transferred her dates to Bhansali's film," says a source close to Deepika.
Deepika was in discussion with Bhansali since early July and signed on the dotted lines only recently.
The dusky actress, who is currently filming for Ayan Mukherjee's Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani with ex Ranbir Kapoor, took off to Bangalore over the weekend to recover from exhaustion.
She'd earlier signed for Rohit Shetty's Chennai Express opposite Shah Rukh Khan, which was originally offered to Kareena Kapoor. Filming for Chennai Express will begin in October.
With Deepika and Ranveer in a film together, it's going to be one sizzling combo!
