MLS player Kirk Urso Dead at 22 |
The Columbus Crew had just been defeated 1-0 at an MLS game in Washington, D.C. when team officials received word that Urso had collapsed at a Columbus bar. Urso, hadn’t been traveling with the team due to an injury. Urso collapsed at Park Street Patio, a popular Columbus bar and was taken to a local trauma center. There Urso was pronounced dead. The investigation of his death is being handled by the coroner’s office.
“He was the kind of person and the kind of leader that we want in the locker room,” Crew president and general manager Mark McCullers said. “That was something that was a really big factor in drafting him. I’m not sure I can stress that enough. He was a good soccer player, but really those characteristics were something that drove the conversation to draft him.”
Urso, who as a collegian played at the University of North Carolina, added a National Championship to his resume in 2011.
