Tom Cruise's Daddy Time with Suri Cruise: Limitations |
Tom Cruise's reunion on July 7 with daughter Suri Cruise in New York, his first Daddy time with the 6-year-old since he signed off her custody to estranged wife Katie Holmes, demonstrated his commitment to his daughter but masked the contradictions in his relationship with her.
When he arrived at Katie's new new Chelsea apartment in New York to collect Suri, Tom had a hard time as Katie refused to meet him and Suri bawled as her nanny handed her over to Tom.
"Suri was happy to see Tom, but at first did not want to leave her mom," a source close to Katie told Star magazine. "She was crying and throwing a tantrum, and Katie felt really bad for putting her through this."
It wasn't long before Suri warmed up to her doting daddy and hit up her usual comfort level with him.
During the time they spent together, Tom splurged $170,000, buying Suri extravagant gifts, dinning out with her at five-star hotels and taking a round-trip helicopter ride to the beach.
Not surprisingly, at the end of her Daddy time, Suri was bawling to avoid returning to her mother.
Tom loves his daughter, despite having capitulated rather easily to Katie demand for Suri's full custody. While negotiating the divorce settlement, Tom's lawyer Bert Fields has said that Tom would never "abandon" Suri.
The problem with Tom is not that he loves Suri any less, but that he loves his films more and isn't prepared to put the brakes on his career.
According to Star magazine, Suri recently wrapped Oblivion and is now already busy with post-production of Jack Reacher and pre-production of a new Doug Liman film, All You Need Is Kill .
He has as many as 10 projects in the pipeline including big ticket sequels like Mission: Impossible 5 and Top Gun 2 .
Tom's involvement in Suri's life is likely to be limited by his personal ambitions. Katie is unlikely to be confronted with a situation where Suri may want to spend more time with him, because Tom simply won't have the additional time that Suri may crave.
