Kareena Kapoor Calls Off The Wedding, Career Comes First |
In a move that surprises many in B-town, Kareena Kapoor has called off her wedding to Saif Ali Khan, 41. However, no statement has been issued by either them or Saif's mother Sharmila Tagore who recently re-confirmed October 16 as the big day.
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's remark that "no married heroine" can be his Juliet seems to have hit home, and hit it hard.
According to some insiders, Kareena, 31, believes her acting career and endorsement deals are going great. Being the highest paid actress of Bollywood, she is not ready to let someone else topple her from that position because of the 'married' tag.
Sharmila admitted to the Mirror that the wedding is not happening in October, but declined from discussing it any further apparently, because her son has asked her to stay quiet until he and Kareena have final plans.
It now makes sense why Saif had all along been evasive about wedding questions, and if at all he always maintained that it will be a year end wedding, not October. The couple's fans though, focused more on matriarch Sharmila's statements twice to the media, which were also echoed by sister Soha Ali Khan at one time.
A family friend gave some insight to Mumbai mirror.
"The wedding was indeed scheduled for October 16. The arrangements had begun. In fact, when Sharmilaji and Bebo were in London last month along with the rest of the family, they shopped for the wedding as well. The venue and the guestlist were also finalised. But Bebo has second thoughts now," said the friend.
"But Sharmilaji is a very non-interfering mom and, by extension, a hands-off mom-in-law. Reports that she has served Saif and Kareena an 'ultimatum' to marry are completely false. She is the last person to persuade her children into taking any decision, especially one as serious as marriage. She has left the final decision to Saif and Kareena," the friend added.
A section of the industry sources have sounded off Mumbai Mirror that Pataudi family's dispute over property in Bhopal may also have something to do with it. Saif's sister Saba is the current custodian of the Auqaf-e-Shahi (the royal wakf properties). Impact of Saif's marriage to a Hindu Kareena had family members worried about the future. Saif's cousin Faiz Bing Jung (bua's son) had earlier said, "The custodian of Auqaf-e-Shahi has to be a Muslim. We are apprehensive about the future."
Saif recently told Mid-Day that give him two months and he will give a wedding date but does not want to talk anything more on the subject now.
Given the short shelf life any actress has in the industry, maybe Bebo has a point.
