| Deepika Padukone Stakes Claim for Lead Role in Bhansali's Ram Leela |
Sanjay Leela Bhansali was said to be in talks with Priyanka Chopra for the headlining role in Ram Leela after Kareena Kapoor dropped out of the project, but now Deepika Padukone is reported to have thrown in her hat.
Fresh off the success of Cocktail, 26-year-old Deepika is actively courting Bhansali for the role, according to a Mumbai Mirror source.
"Priyanka was all but finalized for Ram Leela. Bhansali and PeeCee were in constant touch though she's abroad working on her international music album. In fact even her clothes were finalized. And now Deepika has in her petition for the modern day Juliet, even though she was never on Bhansali's radar," the source told Mirror.
Bhansali opened up to the idea of Deepika playing lead after watching Cocktail and being impressed by Deepika's portrayal of a dark streak in the film.
Priyanka is currently in the US, busy with her debut music album. If she does lose the role, it will be the third instance of Deepika stepping into Kareena's shoes, after Cheenai Express (opposite Shah Rukh Khan) and Karan Johar-Ekta Kapoor's joint production (opposite Emraan Hashmi).
Ram Leela features Ranveer Singh as the male lead.
Bhansali removed Kareena from the project as he did not want a married Juliet.
